Het huidige Cantonspark is ca 3,5 ha groot, maar maakte vóór 1902 deel uit van het veel grotere landgoed Schoonoord, waar de familie Faas Elias de scepter zwaaide. De laatste telg van dit geslacht, de Freule A. Faas Elias, overleed in 1902 op hoge leeftijd, maar zonder directe nakomelingen. Daardoor raakte het omvangrijke landgoed versnipperd en kwam er veel ruimte vrij voor uitbreiding van het dorp.
